PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR YOUR WEDDING

To assist you in the satisfactory planning of your wedding service, we have listed some general information covering a wide range of details.

DATE AND TIME OF YOUR WEDDING

A personal interview with the Wedding Coordinator is ordinarily required before a definite reservation of church facilities is made. This interview will help clarify the intention of Ryerson church, and will help you decide whether or not you wish to proceed with having your wedding here. Date and time of the wedding will be set at this time.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION

We strongly recommend that you attend Marriage Preparation Workshops. In these workshops important issues such as values, patterns and lifestyles are discussed. A brochure outlining content and dates is available.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

You are required to obtain a licence from the Division of Vital Statistics Office, 250-605 Robson Street, Vancouver, BC V6B 5J3. This licence must be in the hands of the minister before the wedding service. The licence is good for three months, and it is suggested that couples obtain a licence early. Please fill out personal information - Personal Health Numbers, Parents' birth names and birth places, and bring it with you to your meeting with the minister.

CHURCH FACILITIES

The church seats up to 600 people. The main seating area of the church holds 450 guests.

INVITATIONS

The suggested form for the address of the church is:

            Ryerson United Church

West 45th Avenue at Yew Street

            Vancouver, BC   V6M 2J2

REHEARSAL

For all formal weddings (with processional, recessional, etc.) a rehearsal is usually necessary. The rehearsal is usually about 30 - 45 minutes in length, and all members of the wedding party and the parents are asked to be present.

ATTENDANTS

You must have 2 witnesses of legal age to stand up with you and sign the legal documents. The total number of attendants is up to you (within reason...). However, the inclusion of children under the age of 5 years is discouraged. (We have stories to tell you!!).

FLOWERS

Flower pedestals (12" square top) are provided. No flowers are allowed on the communion table, candelabra, or organ screen. Markers which cause no disfiguration may be used on the pew ends (i.e. no tape). Please consult the Wedding Coordinator in regard to these arrangements.

WEDDING MUSIC

Please contact Ryerson's Director of Music, Bryn Nixon, regarding music for your wedding service. Bryn usually meets with a couple on Sunday after the regular worship service. If you wish to have a soloist provided (vocal or musical) for an additional fee, please consult with the organist. Where it is desirable to have a personal friend act as soloist, arrangements should be made with the church organist before any invitation to the soloist is extended.

It should be clearly understood, though, that music and musical numbers must, in the opinion of the organist and the minister, be suitable for a service of worship in the church.

NO CONFETTI PLEASE!

In consideration of the church staff, you are asked to ensure that no flower petals, confetti, rice or bird seed is thrown either in or about the church.

PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEO

As the wedding service is a worship service, it is understood that no flash pictures will be taken during the wedding ceremony by either professional photographers or others. However, pictures may be taken as the wedding party enters the church, during the signing of the register, and as the bride and groom return down the main aisle after the service.

Video taping is permissible at the discretion of the officiating minister. No extra lighting or microphones are permitted.

COSTS

Ryerson Council sets fees for weddings which are designed to cover the cost of the Ryerson marriage ministry.
